Rivers State Holds Thanksgiving Service To Mark Return To Democracy

Rivers State has announced the beginning of its transition from emergency rule back to democratic governance, with an inter-denominational thanksgiving service scheduled to usher in the process.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to a statement by Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, the event will take place on Sunday, September 14, at the Ecumenical Centre on Abonima Wharf Road, Port Harcourt.

The service, which begins at 10:00 a.m., will mark the official start of activities leading to the restoration of democracy. Guests are expected to be seated by 9:30 a.m.

Invited dignitaries include traditional rulers, permanent secretaries, local government chairmen, security chiefs, paramilitary leaders, captains of industry, and other key stakeholders.

Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), the state’s Administrator during the period of emergency rule, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara on March 18, 2025, along with his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for 6 months.

The emergency rule is set to expire on Thursday, September 18, and the state will go back to democratic governance.
