National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed that Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4.23 percent in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025.
Gatekeepers News reports that the figure, contained in the Q2 2025 GDP report released on Monday, surpasses the 3.48 percent growth recorded in the same period of 2024, as well as the 3.13 percent growth posted in the first quarter (Q1) of 2025.
NBS noted that the agriculture sector grew by 2.82 percent in Q2, up from 2.60 percent in Q2 2024. The industry sector expanded by 7.45 percent compared to 3.72 percent a year earlier, while the services sector posted a growth rate of 3.94 percent against 3.83 percent in Q2 2024.
The bureau added that the industry sector accounted for 17.31 percent of GDP in Q2, higher than the 16.79 percent share recorded in the same quarter of 2024.
In nominal terms, aggregate GDP stood at N100.73 trillion in Q2 2025, compared to N84.48 trillion in Q2 2024, reflecting a year-on-year nominal growth of 19.23 percent. Real GDP, according to the bureau, stood at N51.20 trillion.
The report shows that oil production rose to an average of 1.68 million barrels per day (mbpd) in Q2 2025, compared to 1.62 mbpd in Q1.
On a year-on-year basis, the oil sector grew by 20.46 percent in Q2 2025, up from 10.08 percent in Q2 2024. Compared to Q1 2025, when growth stood at 1.87 percent, the sector’s performance improved by 18.59 percentage points. On a quarter-to-quarter basis, oil GDP grew by 6.01 percent.
The oil sector contributed 4.05 percent to total real GDP in Q2 2025, higher than the 3.51 percent recorded in Q2 2024 and the 3.97 percent share posted in Q1 2025.
Non-Oil Sector Contribution
Meanwhile, the non-oil sector grew by 3.64 percent in Q2 and contributed 95.95 percent to GDP. This represents a slight drop compared to 96.49 percent in Q2 2024 and 96.03 percent in Q1 2025.
NBS said non-oil growth was driven mainly by agriculture (crop production), information and communication (telecommunication), real estate, financial and insurance institutions, trade, construction, and electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply.
