Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that Delta Airlines diverted its Lagos–Atlanta flight to Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday, following a fire incident onboard.

Gatekeepers Newreports that in a statement posted on X, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, said the fire started in the aircraft oven.

He explained that although the issue was resolved, the crew had already exceeded their regulated rest time, making it impossible to continue the flight.

“However, some passengers were rebooked on the airline’s Accra–New York flight the same evening, and this effort was repeated on Wednesday night for additional passengers,” Achimugu said.

“Flight DL055 LOS–ATL finally departed from Accra today, September 25, 2025, at approximately 1200hrs.”

Achimugu also confirmed that Delta’s Atlanta–Lagos service scheduled for Thursday was cancelled. He added that affected passengers were duly notified, with hotel accommodation provided for those who arrived at the airport.

According to him, 23 passengers were rebooked on Air France, while others were accommodated on British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa flights. “The remaining passengers are scheduled to depart on the airline’s scheduled flight of tomorrow, September 26, 2025, at 1140hrs,” he said.

Clarifying circulating reports, Achimugu added: “Air France flight has not been cancelled as speculated but would operate at 0130hrs.”

He wished the affected passengers safe travels, noting that “follow-up efforts are ongoing.”
