Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to delivering more transparent and credible elections in 2027.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Abbas made the remark during a meeting with a European Union (EU) delegation in Abuja, noting that the National Assembly is currently amending the Electoral Act 2022 to strengthen credibility and address concerns raised after the 2023 polls.

“I want to acknowledge that the leadership of the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is very committed to ensuring that we improve on our electoral processes, particularly regarding the observations made (by international observers) in the 2023 election,” Abbas said.

He added that lawmakers were working to incorporate issues raised during the last elections into the amendments.

“We in the National Assembly have also been busy working to gather as many issues as possible arising from the last elections, so that we can legislatively address them, so that our next election will be more transparent, acceptable, and in alignment with international standards,” he said.

Abbas revealed that Senate and House leadership had met last week to harmonize positions on the proposed changes. He also appealed to the EU delegation for support in advocacy and public sensitization to build consensus around the reforms.

The EU delegation, led by Barry Andrews, a member of the European Parliament, commended the National Assembly’s role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. Other members included EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot, election experts Ralph-Michael Peters and Eirini-Maria Gounari, election administration expert Maros Gabriel, programme manager Laolu Olawumi, and political adviser Osaro Odemwingie.
