Army Officer Dies After Fire Allegedly Set By Wife During Domestic Dispute

A Nigerian Army officer, Lieutenant Samson Haruna, has died from severe burns sustained in a fire reportedly ignited by his wife, Retyit Haruna, during a domestic dispute.

Gatekeepers News reports that the tragic incident took place on September 22 at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

According to reports, the disagreement between the couple escalated, leading Mrs. Haruna to allegedly set household items on fire, which quickly spread and engulfed their residence.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Lawal Muhammad, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 2 Brigade in Akwa Ibom, confirmed that Lieutenant Haruna was initially treated at the battalion’s medical facility before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on October 7, 2025.

The statement reads, “Preliminary findings indicate that the incident followed a heated argument between the couple. Mrs. Haruna allegedly set some belongings ablaze, and the officer was caught in the resulting fire.”

The Nigerian Army condemned the act, describing it as a disturbing case of domestic violence.

The statement added, “The Army remains committed to promoting peaceful family relationships and discouraging domestic abuse in all forms.” The force extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Sources confirmed that his wife has since been arrested as military police continue their investigation.
