The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has revoked the registration certificate of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) following years of internal leadership crisis and repeated governance breaches.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement released on Tuesday, Omolara Esan, Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, confirmed that the ministry received a formal notice from the CAC dated October 6, 2025, announcing the withdrawal of the council’s registration, which had originally been granted on October 28, 2020.
According to Esan, the decision was the result of a comprehensive investigation into the council’s operations, which had been marred by leadership disputes lasting more than eighteen years.
The CAC acted under the authority of Sections 8(1)(c) and 8(1)(d) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, after uncovering repeated breaches of both the NYCN constitution and the law.
The statement reads, “Upon a detailed review of the Council’s records and governance practices, the Corporate Affairs Commission found serial violations of both the NYCN Constitution and the provisions of CAMA 2020, particularly Sections 833 and 834.”
“Consequently, the Commission has derecognised all existing claims to leadership, trusteeship, and management within the organisation.”
Following the revocation, the CAC has established an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to manage the council’s affairs for one year, effective October 6, 2025.
Esan said, “As the supervisory authority over the National Youth Council of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, being a law-abiding institution, takes due cognisance of this development and acknowledges the legal authority of the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Companies and Allied Matters Act, 2020.”
She urged all stakeholders, youth groups, and partners of the council to cooperate with the newly appointed interim committee in its restructuring efforts. The ongoing reform, she said, aims to restore unity, legitimacy, and institutional integrity to the NYCN in line with its founding vision.
Esan reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to advancing youth empowerment, stressing that it remains committed to creating a credible and inclusive governance structure that promotes accountability, transparency, and aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
