An aircraft transporting 12 people, all foreign tourists, has crashed in Kwale County, near Kenya’s coastal region.
Gatekeepers News reports that the plane, which was en route to Maasai Mara National Reserve, reportedly went down shortly after takeoff early Tuesday morning.
The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s most renowned safari destinations, known for hosting the annual wildebeest migration from Tanzania’s Serengeti.
According to Daily Nation, the aircraft burst into flames upon impact, with wreckage scattered across the crash site. The newspaper shared photos showing the burning debris and emergency responders at the scene.
In a statement, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed that relevant government agencies had been deployed to investigate the cause of the accident and evaluate the extent of the damage.
Daily Nation also reported that heavy rainfall had hit the area the previous night, and by morning, dense fog blanketed the hilly landscape, possibly contributing to poor visibility.
Kwale County Commissioner Stephen Orinde said all passengers aboard were foreign nationals, adding that their identities and countries of origin would be released after official confirmation.
