Lawmakers in Benin have passed a constitutional amendment extending the president’s term to seven years, with the possibility of re-election for just one additional term.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a vote of 90–19, the national assembly approved a change to Article 42, ensuring that no one can, in their lifetime, exercise more than two terms as President of the Republic. The reform also applies to mayors and municipal councillors.
The decision comes ahead of 2026 presidential election, when President Patrice Talon, in office since 2016 and currently serving his second term, is due to step down.
Although Talon has publicly stated he will not run again, critics argue this amendment could reshape political dynamics.
