Department of State Services (DSS) has filed charges against Abdulazeez Obadaki, accused of orchestrating both 2022 breach of Kuje correctional centre and 2012 attack on the Deeper Life Bible Church in Okene, Kogi state.
Gatekeepers News reports that the 2012 incident left at least 19 people dead, including a pastor, after three gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed the church during an evening service and opened fire on worshippers.
Obadaki, popularly known as Bomboy, appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Abuja Federal High Court on Thursday.
He is facing a six-count charge that includes terrorism, conspiracy, aiding violent attacks, withholding information, and escaping from lawful custody.
According to the DSS, the defendant, identified as a member of the Ansaru terrorist network, was involved in several deadly operations.
These reportedly included coordinated assaults on commercial banks in Uromi, Esan North-East LGA of Edo state, where multiple casualties were recorded and substantial amounts of money were stolen.
He had previously been held at the Kuje correctional centre before fleeing during the July 2022 jailbreak, an incident in which over 500 inmates escaped.
In the charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/629/2025, prosecutors alleged that Obadaki joined the terrorist group through an individual identified as Abu Muhsab and later withheld information that could have led to his own arrest.
They also accused him of supporting the organisation by encouraging additional attacks, including the 2022 bank raids.
DSS further claimed that he worked with Muhsab and other accomplices, who remain at large, in planning the Kuje prison attack that enabled his escape.
When the counts were read, Obadaki admitted guilt only to the sixth charge, which concerns escaping from lawful custody.
The court adjourned the matter to January 26, 2026, to examine the facts surrounding his plea and continue trial on the remaining allegations. Justice Abdulmalik directed that he remain in DSS custody until the next sitting.
In a separate hearing held the same day, the DSS also charged Innocent Chukwuemeka, a social media user accused of advocating a military coup through posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
He faces allegations of making false statements capable of causing public alarm and engaging in cyberstalking.
Chukwuemeka entered a not-guilty plea, and the court fixed January 26, 2026, for his hearing, ordering that he also be held in DSS custody.
