The Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele on Monday rolled out the many achievements under his stewardship as part of activities marking the 50 years anniversary of the institution.
Gatekeepers News reports the UNIMAID which was established in 1975 as one of the seven second-generation universities by the then Federal Military Government, is bracing for a double celebration, as the institution also plan to hold its 25th Convocation slated for 29th November 2025.
Prof. Mele made the disclosure during a press conference held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Center in UNIMAID, Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to the Vice Chancellor, “This year, the University of Maiduguri proudly graduates 20,164 students – one of the largest cohorts in our history. These include: 66 PhDs, 1,020 Master’s Degrees 3,851 Postgraduate Diplomas 13,624 Bachelor’s Degrees 1,699 Diplomas.
“For the Bachelor’s degree, there are:
205 First Class Honours
3,114 Second Class Upper
9,501 Second Class Lower. ” he said.

The VC maintained that 50th Anniversary celebration is a profound celebration of resilience, growth and unwavering purpose. Pointing out ” From its humble beginnings with just two faculties, the University of Maiduguri has evolved into a vibrant institution comprising 17 faculties, a College of Medical Sciences, a dynamic.
“College of Postgraduate Studies and 12 specialised research centres. Through years marked by insurgency, economic constraints and even a global pandemic, the University has stood firm as a steadfast symbol of courage, stability and intellectual fortitude for the entire Sahel
region.

“During this celebration, the University will honour three exceptional Nigerians whose
contributions to society are exemplary as well as appointment as Professors Emeriti some professors whose mentorship and service have left an indelible legacy on this University,” The VC said.
Prof Mele rolled out key achievements, including ” full domestication of the NUC Quality Assurance Framework, ensuring that departmental academic boards rigorously monitor curriculum delivery.
Enhanced oversight by Heads of Departments, Deans and the Academic Planning Unit to ensure learning resources are current, relevant and effectively utilised.
“UNIMAID is one of the key beneficiaries of the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (IDICE) project, co-financed by AfDB, AFD, IDB and the Federal Government.
“This is a landmark achievement that positions UNIMAID as a regional powerhouse for digital innovation.
“UNIMAID is one of the 10 federal universities shortlisted from 28 institutions nationwide to benefit from this highly competitive ICT enhancement project.
The four-year programme aims to:
Upgrade campus-wide digital infrastructure
Automate key administrative workflows
Deepen e-learning capabilities
“Build digital literacy and competencies across staff and students
Once fully implemented, UNIMAID will operate with the digital agility expected of a globally competitive university.” The VC said amongst other notable achievements
To secure the next fifty years and beyond according to the VC , ” the University has established the UNIMAID Endowment Fund. It is expected to serve as an enduring vehicle to strengthen research, expand infrastructure, nurture innovation, support scholarships and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
“We therefore extend an earnest call to our alumni; partners, corporate organisations,
philanthropists and all lovers of education to join hands with us in shaping the UNIMAID of the future. Help us build a stronger, smarter and ever more impactful institution for generations to come.” The VC said.
