Several travellers were reportedly injured on Wednesday after an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly planted by bandits, detonated along the Gurusu–Gwashi road in Bukkuyum LGA of Zamfara state.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism publication, the explosion struck a Toyota Eagle Eye vehicle around 08:32 a.m., throwing it off balance and causing panic among other commuters on the route. The affected passengers were said to be travelling from Gwashi when the device went off.
Troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, supported by tactical teams and bomb disposal experts, were immediately deployed to secure the area, assess the damage, and commence recovery operations. The publication said efforts were underway to verify the number of casualties, as soldiers combed the scene for remnants of the explosive.
The attack is suspected to have been carried out by a bandit kingpin known as Sadiku, who is believed to be aligned with the Dogo Gide faction.
Authorities have urged travellers to remain vigilant and avoid isolated routes as security operations intensify in the region.
Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson of the Zamfara police command, was not immediately available for comment.
