FCCPC Cautions Transport Operators Over Fare Increases

Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has cautioned inter-city road transport operators against imposing arbitrary and unexplained fare increases during the yuletide period.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued on Sunday, Ondaje Ijagwu, director of corporate affairs, said the commission has recorded a rise in complaints from consumers across the country over sudden hikes in transport fares.

Ijagwu noted that the complaints came despite reductions in the pump price of premium motor spirit, also known as petrol, in some parts of Nigeria.

He acknowledged that seasonal demand, operational challenges, and other legitimate cost factors can influence transport pricing.

The statement added, “However, consumers are entitled to clear, accurate, and timely information on fares before travel. Any fare adjustment must therefore be transparently communicated and applied fairly.”

“While fuel cost is only one of several inputs that may influence transport fares, increases that are not properly explained or disclosed raise valid consumer protection concerns.”

Also speaking, Tunji Bello, executive vice-chairman and chief executive officer of the FCCPC, said the commission is closely observing market practices throughout the festive season.

Bello said the agency has stepped up engagement with transport unions, park managers, and operators nationwide to promote responsible pricing, voluntary compliance, and orderly conduct in the market.

He explained that while fare increases are not illegal on their own, practices that exploit consumers or take unfair advantage of increased seasonal demand may attract sanctions under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018.

The FCCPC chief warned that actions such as poor fare disclosure, coercive behaviour, or coordinated pricing among operators to the disadvantage of consumers would be carefully examined.

He said, “Where cases of violation are established, culprits face stiff penalties.”

“Consumers are advised to confirm fares before travel, retain evidence of payment, and report any suspected unfair practices to the commission through its complaint portal at complaints.fccpc.gov.ng or via the hotlines 0805 600 3030 and 0805 600 2020.”

The commission also recalled that on December 12, it opened an investigation into ticket pricing templates used by some domestic airlines following growing public complaints over sharp fare increases on certain routes.
