Tanker Crash Kills Police Dispatch Rider In Akpabio Convoy

A police dispatch rider attached to the convoy of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Ibrahim Hussaini, has died following a road accident involving a petrol tanker.

Gatekeepers News reports that Akpabio announced the death on Tuesday during plenary, where he informed lawmakers that the incident occurred on Sunday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

He said the accident occurred shortly after his convoy picked him up at the Ibadan airport while he was attending an official function in the state.

He said, “We went to Oyo state for the installation of our colleague.”

The Senate president disclosed that the late officer was buried on Tuesday morning in Kogi State and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

He noted that Hussaini, a deputy superintendent of police, was a key member of his convoy and left behind two wives and four children.

Dispatch riders, who are often police officers, usually ride government-branded motorcycles as part of convoys attached to public officeholders.

Akpabio appealed to heads of ministries, departments, and agencies to consider the automatic employment of the late officer’s children.

He added that he would personally ensure their employment if vacancies were unavailable.

The Senate President added, “By the grace of God, I’m recommending two of his senior children for employment immediately in any parastatals that may wish to, otherwise I’ll employ them personally in any of my private concerns.”

Following the announcement, Sunday Karimi, the senator representing Kogi West, moved to formally present the incident to the Senate.

While sympathising with Akpabio, Karimi said Hussaini was due for retirement next year and had served in the Senate president’s convoy since 2023.

Karimi also informed lawmakers of the death of Ibrahim Tukur, a driver attached to Isah Jibrin, senator representing Kogi East. He said Tukur, who had worked with Jibrin for 25 years, died at his residence on Saturday.

Jibrin later confirmed the death, stating that Tukur had been with him since his banking days at the defunct Afribank, and prayed for the repose of his soul.

The Senate thereafter observed a one-minute silence in honour of the late dispatch rider and the deceased driver.
