Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed circulating reports stating that it has published the timetable and schedule of activities for 2027 general election.
Gatekeepers News reports that the commission clarified that the information being shared in some quarters did not originate from INEC and should not be taken as authentic.
In a statement issued on Friday, Adedayo Oketola, spokesperson to the INEC chairman, described the reports as inaccurate.
He said, “INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 general election.”
Oketola explained that the commission follows strict legal guidelines in carrying out its duties, especially in relation to election preparations.
He said, “The Commission reiterates that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law. In particular, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 provides that the Commission shall publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.”
According to INEC, any timetable released outside this legal timeframe cannot be linked to the commission. The electoral body assured Nigerians that preparations for future elections would be made public only at the appropriate time and through official channels.
The statement added, “INEC assures Nigerians that the official Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election will be released in due course, in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.”
“When released, it will be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels.”
INEC also advised the public and media organisations to ignore unverified reports and rely solely on INEC’s official platforms for credible information, as the spread of false election-related details could mislead voters and stakeholders ahead of future polls.
