Manchester United has ended Ruben Amorim’s time as manager following an internal decision by the club’s leadership.

Gatekeepers News reports that Premier League side confirmed his dismissal in an official statement released on Monday, bringing his 14-month stay at the club to an end.

In the statement, the club explained the reason for the change, saying, “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

Amorim was formally informed of the decision after a meeting with senior executives Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada. The Portuguese coach had joined the club in November 2024 amid high expectations, following his reputation for tactical innovation in Portugal.

Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and current U-18 coach, has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the team in their upcoming league match against Burnley. The club is expected to begin the process of appointing a permanent manager in the coming weeks.

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford was marked by inconsistent results and criticism over his tactical approach, which many felt lacked flexibility. Last season, he oversaw United’s worst-ever Premier League finish in 15th place and fell short in the Europa League final, losing to Tottenham Hotspur.

Although there was a slight improvement this season, with eight wins from 20 league matches, United struggled for momentum and managed just one victory in their last five games.

Overall, Amorim won 25 of his 63 matches in charge, making his reign the shortest since David Moyes’ eight-month stint in 2014.
