Lagos State Government has ordered an investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the son of renowned Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie, following an alleged medical incident at a private hospital in the state.
Gatekeepers News reports that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the directive through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency as concerns grew over the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The Governor expressed condolences to Adichie and her family, describing the loss of a child as deeply painful and assuring them of the government’s commitment to justice.
The state government said it has zero tolerance for medical negligence and unprofessional conduct in any health facility operating in Lagos, stressing that the safety of patients remains a priority.
It added that the investigation will be thorough, independent, and transparent, and will focus on both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.
HEFAMAA has begun the probe and has already visited the hospital involved. The agency is expected to review all reports and allegations linked to the case and work with relevant professional bodies, including the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, to ensure due process and credibility.
The investigation will assess compliance with clinical procedures, professional conduct, and patient safety standards. The government said the findings will be made public once the process is concluded and assured residents that anyone found culpable will face appropriate legal action.
Adichie lost her 21-month-old son on January 7 after a brief illness. She has accused Euracare Hospital of criminal negligence, alleging that medical lapses during a routine procedure led to the tragedy.
The hospital, however, said it has opened its own internal investigation, explaining that the child was critically ill and had been referred from other facilities before admission.
Euracare added that care was provided according to standard medical protocols and that the child died less than 24 hours after admission.
The Lagos State Government urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening oversight of medical practice across the state.
