EKO 170 Cycling Race Marks Major Success In Lagos

On Sunday, January 11, 2026, the much-anticipated Lagos Gran Fondo “EKO 170” cycling event successfully took place.

Gatekeepers News reports that the event drew cyclists from across Nigeria and beyond in a landmark achievement for sports development and tourism in the state.

The 170-kilometre endurance race, regarded as one of the longest cycling challenges ever staged in the country, began and ended at Eko Atlantic City, offering participants a demanding but scenic journey through key parts of Lagos.

From the early hours of the day, professional and amateur cyclists alike took to the designated routes, which cut across major roads and coastal corridors.

In addition to the main 170-kilometre challenge, a 70-kilometre race was organised to encourage wider participation, allowing less experienced riders to be part of the historic event. Spectators lined sections of the route, creating a lively atmosphere that blended competitive sport with public celebration.

The success of the race was strongly supported by effective planning and coordination. Lagos State Government, working with Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and security agencies, implemented traffic diversions and safety measures to ensure smooth movement and public safety.

Although some roads were temporarily restricted, officials reported minimal disruption, with residents largely complying with advisories issued ahead of the event.

Organisers noted that the EKO 170 was designed not only as a sporting competition but also as a platform to promote healthy living, sports tourism, and positive city branding.

The race showcased Lagos’s growing infrastructure and waterfront landscape, reinforcing its image as a city capable of hosting large-scale international sporting events through effective public-private partnerships.

The successful staging of the EKO 170 cycling race stands as a strong statement of Lagos’s commitment to sports development, community engagement, and global visibility, marking a significant step forward for endurance sports in the country.
