Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has clarified that there is nothing personal in the corruption investigation involving Abubakar Malami, former Attorney‑General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, saying the case was already underway before he took office.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a Sunday interview on national television, Olukoyede said the probe into Malami’s conduct began under earlier EFCC leadership and that he merely continued the work, ensuring a professional and thorough examination of the allegations.
The EFCC boss emphasised that corruption investigations involving high‑profile figures take time and should not be seen as politically motivated.
Malami, who was arraigned in December 2025 at Federal High Court in Abuja on a 16‑count charge of alleged money laundering alongside his wife and son, had accused Olukoyede of bias and political persecution, especially after his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Responding to claims that he had been indicted by the Justice Ayo Salami judicial commission of inquiry, Olukoyede challenged those making the allegation to publish the report publicly if it existed, stressing that he has never been involved in fraud throughout his public service career.
The EFCC boss reiterated that its mandate covers all corruption cases regardless of political affiliation and that the investigation against Malami was inherited, not personally initiated by him. He urged Nigerians to view the fight against corruption as non‑partisan and to allow due process to play out in court.
