The killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi, Kano State, has sparked renewed calls from civil society organisations for justice, accountability and decisive action to address the root causes of violence, including drug abuse.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices (YOSPIS) condemned the attack, describing it as “deeply disturbing” and a grave violation of the right to life.
In a statement issued at the weekend and signed by its Executive Director, Zainab Nasir Ahmad, the organisation said the incident had shocked the public conscience and highlighted the growing insecurity within communities.
YOSPIS expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and residents of Dorayi, noting that the scale of the killings had intensified fear and grief in the area. The group urged authorities to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice, stressing that accountability is vital to restoring public confidence.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to restore public confidence and serve as a deterrent,” the statement said.
The organisation also commended the Kano State Police Command for the swift arrest of suspects linked to the killings, while calling on law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough, transparent and expedited investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crime.
Beyond the immediate incident, YOSPIS linked the killings to broader social challenges, particularly the growing impact of drug abuse on public safety. The group warned that substance dependence often fuels violent behaviour and contributes to the breakdown of families and communities.
It called on the Kano State Government, security agencies, community and religious leaders, parents and civil society groups to intensify efforts to curb drug abuse through prevention programmes, rehabilitation services, youth empowerment initiatives and community-based interventions.
“Fighting drugs is not optional; it is essential to securing lives and restoring social order,” YOSPIS said, adding that violence against women and children must never be tolerated under any circumstances.
