Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Gatekeepers News reports that Showunmi made the announcement during a visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta, where he also sought collaboration with political stakeholders across party lines.
“I will be running for Governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee among yourselves to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen,” he said.
The former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticised the growing trend of imposing candidates, insisting that leadership in the state should emerge through a credible and competitive process rather than political arrangements.
Showunmi warned that allowing any individual to emerge as a consensus candidate without proper contest would undermine democracy and deny residents the opportunity to choose from a range of ideas and leadership options.
He also called for stronger alliances among opposition parties, arguing that no single party can effectively challenge the dominance of the ruling party without building broad-based coalitions.
