The magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the crash with former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that Kayode appeared before the court on Tuesday for the continuation of his trial. He had been charged by the Ogun State Police Command on January 2 with four counts, including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun had previously granted Kayode N5 million bail with two sureties, remanding him in a correctional facility until the bail conditions were met. The case was initially scheduled for trial on January 20.
Tuesday’s Proceedings
During Tuesday’s hearing, prosecuting counsel Richard Nigiwe informed the court that three of the four witnesses were present, including officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Nigiwe requested the court to adjourn the case to March to allow duplication of the case file and submission to the Attorney-General of Ogun State for legal advice.
The defence, led by Olalekan Abiodun, objected, arguing that with three witnesses in court, the trial should proceed.
However, Magistrate Somefun ruled the trial be adjourned to February 25, ordering the case file to be duplicated and sent to the Ogun State AG for legal counsel.
