The National Assembly has shifted the resumption of plenary sittings to March 5 to allow lawmakers conclude ongoing budget defence sessions with ministries, departments, and agencies.

Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was communicated to senators and members of the House of Representatives through separate internal notices issued by the Clerk to the National Assembly.

The leadership explained that the adjustment became necessary due to the extended schedule of the 2026 budget defence, which requires more time for detailed scrutiny and engagements with government agencies.

According to the notice, the extension will enable standing committees to complete their interactions with heads of MDAs, assess budget proposals thoroughly, and address outstanding issues before final legislative consideration. Lawmakers were urged to use the period to intensify oversight and ensure that allocations reflect national priorities and development needs.

The budget defence sessions form a critical part of the legislative process, as they allow parliament to evaluate government spending plans, ensure accountability, and align fiscal projections with policy objectives. The leadership of the National Assembly said the postponement would help achieve a more comprehensive and transparent budget process.

Plenary sittings are expected to resume on March 5, after which lawmakers will deliberate on committee reports and take further legislative actions related to the 2026 budget.
