The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has announced a 13 per cent increase in fares across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) services, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes, following approval by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo–Olu.
Gatekeepers News reports that LAMATA said the fare adjustment is part of an existing annual review framework and reflects rising operational costs driven by inflation.
“The review is also in line with the previously approved annual fare review mechanism. The urgency of the review, officials noted, is underscored by persistent inflationary trends, with Nigeria’s inflation rate closing 2025 at 15.2 per cent, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),” said Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication.
The agency added that transport operators are investing in newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses to improve service delivery and passenger comfort.
“In a bid to maintain and improve service standards, operators are also investing in the procurement of new, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses to enhance passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability,” the statement said.
LAMATA assured commuters that the government remains committed to balancing affordability with the need for safe, reliable, and efficient public transport.
The new fares will take effect from March 2, 2026.
