Civil society organisation Citizens’ Gavel has called on Tunji Disu, the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, to champion the full implementation of the Police Act, 2020, as part of efforts to reform and reposition the Nigeria Police Force.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement issued on Thursday, the group urged Disu to build on his professional record by promoting a citizen-centred approach across all levels of the police hierarchy.
Citizens’ Gavel Operations Lead, Ajibade Oluwafemi, referenced Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021, noting that the unit earned a reputation for professionalism and public-oriented policing during that period.
According to him, the RRS became known for ethical conduct, assisting accident victims, helping stranded motorists, and rejecting bribes—demonstrating that effective policing can coexist with respect for citizens’ rights.
“Mr. Disu is widely recognised as someone who treats policing as a public service rather than a coercive force. His appointment comes at a time when Nigerians are seeking renewed confidence in the police and a system that upholds human rights while maintaining public safety,” Oluwafemi said.
The organisation stressed the need for officers to operate within a framework that prioritises service over intimidation, while calling for training in modern policing techniques, ethical investigations, and conflict de-escalation.
It also highlighted the importance of improving officers’ welfare, noting that fair salaries, access to healthcare, proper equipment, and decent housing are critical to ensuring professionalism and effective service delivery.
Citizens’ Gavel further urged strict adherence to the Police Act, 2020, and continuity in ongoing reform efforts, supported by measurable benchmarks and public accountability.
The group expressed confidence that Disu would extend his reputation for integrity and professionalism to the national level and help strengthen public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
