Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that all cash transactions at airports across the country will be discontinued from March 1, 2026, as it moves to fully deploy a contactless and cashless payment system nationwide.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement shared on its official X handle on Friday, the authority said the initiative is designed to speed up transactions, improve security, and provide a smoother payment experience for airport users.

FAAN urged passengers and other airport users to obtain its Go-Cashless cards from commercial offices and access gates in preparation for the transition.

The cashless drive, launched under the “Operation Go Cashless” initiative, was introduced in September 2025 in partnership with Paystack. The programme began its pilot phase in Lagos and Abuja on September 30, 2025, before being gradually extended to other airports across the country.

FAAN explained that the new system would eliminate the collection of physical cash at major revenue points, including airport access gates, car parks, and VIP and protocol lounges.

The move aligns with the federal government’s broader policy directing all ministries, departments, and agencies to adopt electronic payment systems in compliance with the Treasury Single Account framework.

The directive, issued by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, strictly prohibits the acceptance of physical cash for government revenue.

He warned that all collections must be processed electronically and ordered MDAs to educate staff and the public while displaying notices at revenue points to reflect the no-cash policy.

FAAN said the full implementation of the cashless system is expected to enhance transparency, curb revenue leakages, and modernise airport operations across Nigeria.
