Governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri has formally defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gatekeepers News reports that in a statewide broadcast on Friday morning, Fintiri announced his decision to align with the ruling party, stating that members of his cabinet, key political allies, and a large number of PDP supporters across the state had also joined him in the move.

He said the decision followed wide consultations with political stakeholders, traditional rulers, community leaders, and supporters across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa.

According to the Governor, the defection was driven by the need to reposition the state for greater development, improved federal collaboration, and better access to national resources. He noted that remaining in the opposition had increasingly limited Adamawa’s ability to attract critical federal projects and investments.

Fintiri’s announcement confirmed widespread speculation that had trailed his political future for several weeks. Tension within PDP in Adamawa had intensified earlier in the week after 15 members of the state House of Assembly, including Speaker Bathiya Wesley and Deputy Speaker Buba Jijiwa, resigned their membership of the party and joined APC.

The lawmakers blamed their decision on alleged prolonged leadership crisis and internal divisions within the PDP at both state and national levels.

With the Governor’s exit, the PDP is now left with only three serving Governors nationwide, further deepening the party’s leadership and electoral challenges.

APC leadership has welcomed Fintiri’s move, describing it as a boost to the party’s growing influence and a sign of increasing confidence in the federal government’s policies and direction.
