Nigeria Police Council has approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was taken on Monday during a high-level meeting held at the State House, Abuja, presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The session brought together key stakeholders, including state governors from Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Enugu, and Plateau, as well as the ministers of police affairs, interior, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Following the endorsement, President Tinubu is expected to transmit Disu’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions governing the appointment of the nation’s police chief.
Disu had earlier been appointed as acting IGP on February 24, 2026, after the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. The presidency announced at the time that Egbetokun stepped down due to what it described as “pressing family considerations,” ending his tenure less than three years after assuming office.
Egbetokun himself was appointed IGP by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, replacing Usman Baba. His appointment was subsequently ratified by the Police Council in October 2023.
Before his elevation to the top position, Disu had only recently taken over as Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos — a strategic command responsible for handling some of the country’s most sensitive criminal investigations.
Widely regarded as a seasoned officer with extensive operational and intelligence experience, Disu brings more than three decades of service to his new role. He joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has since held several critical leadership positions across different states and departments.
His career trajectory includes stints as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, head of the Intelligence Response Team, Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and Federal Capital Territory, and Assistant Inspector-General overseeing the Special Protection Unit, which is responsible for the security of top government officials and high-profile individuals.
Academically, Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, alongside master’s degrees in Public Administration and Criminology, as well as Security and Legal Psychology. His educational background, combined with his operational expertise, is expected to shape his leadership approach as he takes charge of a police force grappling with complex security challenges.
With his confirmation by the Police Council now secured, attention shifts to the Senate, where lawmakers are expected to conduct a formal screening before giving final legislative approval to his appointment.
