National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Uzoma Valentine Ilomuanya, a 58-year-old fugitive suspected of leading drug trafficking networks in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, ending a 15-year run from justice.
Gatekeepers News reports that Ilomuanya was apprehended in Lagos on February 23, 2026, following a high-risk, intelligence-led operation by the agency’s Special Operations Unit. He had been on the wanted lists of NDLEA and British authorities for more than a decade and a half due to his involvement in alleged drug trafficking offences.
Ilomuanya’s legal troubles date back to February 2003, when he was first arrested and convicted in the UK for drug trafficking, receiving a nine-year sentence but serving only two years following an appeal. He was again arrested in the UK in July 2011 but fled to Nigeria after being granted administrative bail.
In November 2018, NDLEA operatives uncovered two clandestine methamphetamine laboratories linked to him, one at his residence in Lagos and another at his country home in Obinugwu, Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, where nearly 78 kilograms of methamphetamine and production equipment were seized. After being charged in a Federal High Court in Lagos, Ilomuanya jumped bail and remained at large until his recent arrest.
Commenting on the breakthrough, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) described the arrest as a significant victory in the agency’s ongoing fight against international drug trafficking. He said the development serves as a stern warningbthat those who evade justice across borders will eventually be brought to account.
Ilomuanya is expected to be re-arraigned in Nigerian courts as part of renewed prosecution efforts, underscoring the NDLEA’s intensified crackdown on drug cartels operating domestically and internationally.
