President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sworn in Tunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector‑General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that the event took place shortly before the Federal Executive Council meeting and was attended by top government officials, ministers, and members of Disu’s family.
Disu, who earlier served as the acting IGP following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council after his appointment was unanimously ratified on March 2, 2026. His swearing‑in completes the leadership transition in the Nigeria Police Force.
At exactly 2:53 p.m., Disu took the oath of office administered by the State House Director of Information. The President also administered oaths to six commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and two members of the Federal Civil Service Commission during the same ceremony.
The new IGP brings extensive experience from his more than three decades of service in the force, including leadership roles such as head of Lagos State Rapid Response Squad and commanding key investigative units.
Leaders present at the event, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and other dignitaries, welcomed his formal elevation and called for strengthened policing and improved security operations nationwide.
Disu has pledged to enhance professionalism, enforce discipline, and restore public confidence in the police as he assumes leadership of the force at a time of heightened security concerns across the country.
