Four people have died in a tragic road accident involving a truck and a commercial mini bus along the Lekki–Epe expressway in Lagos.
Gatekeepers News reports that the crash occurred opposite Beechwood in Shapati, inward Ajah, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
In a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the accident involved a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a Suzuki commercial mini bus, popularly called “korope”.
Preliminary findings revealed that the truck driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered across the road, crashing into the oncoming commercial bus conveying passengers. The impact killed four male passengers instantly, while four others — two men and two women — sustained serious injuries after becoming trapped in the wreckage.
Officials of LASTMA and other emergency responders arrived at the scene and rescued the injured victims from the damaged bus. The injured passengers were taken to Hamon Royal Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Shency Hospital morgue by an ambulance from the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Elemoro division also secured the scene and managed traffic during the rescue operation. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck and his motorboy reportedly fled the scene after the crash.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA general manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists, especially drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to obey traffic regulations to prevent avoidable road accidents.
