Iran Rejects UN Resolution Condemning Strikes On Gulf States

The Iran has criticised a recent resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council condemning its actions in the Gulf region, describing the measure as one-sided and politically motivated.

Gatekeepers Newreports that on Wednesday, the council adopted a resolution urging Tehran to immediately halt hostilities following attacks targeting countries in the Gulf region and Jordan.

The resolution, presented by Bahrain and co-sponsored by 135 member states of the United Nations, was adopted with 13 votes in favour, while Russia and China abstained.

Under Resolution 2817 (2026), the council condemned Iran’s missile and drone strikes on Gulf states, saying the attacks had deepened divisions as tensions in the Middle East escalated.

The council said the strikes constituted a breach of international law and posed a serious threat to international peace and security.

It also denounced the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including ports and energy facilities, noting that the attacks resulted in civilian casualties and damage to buildings.

The council further reaffirmed its support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence of member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council and Jordan.

However, speaking on Monday, Gholamreza Raja, Iran’s ambassador to Nigeria, said the resolution failed to reflect the realities surrounding the crisis and ignored what he described as “acts of aggression” against Iran.

According to the envoy, the measure — which called for an immediate halt to hostilities and condemned Iran’s alleged targeting of critical infrastructure across the Gulf region — did not address the root causes of the conflict.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the recent resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council, which condemns Iran’s defensive actions in response to regional developments, as a one-sided and politically motivated measure that does not reflect the realities on the ground,” he said.

“The resolution has been drafted without due regard to the root causes of the crisis and the acts of aggression carried out against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and therefore represents yet another example of a selective approach and double standards within the Security Council.”

Raja added that Iran’s actions were carried out within the framework of international law, particularly its right to self-defence.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates that the measures taken were solely within the framework of its inherent right to self-defence in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter,” he said.

He argued that responsibility for escalating tensions in the region lies with parties whose actions have contributed to instability.

“It is evident that the responsibility for escalating tensions in the region lies with those parties whose provocative and aggressive actions have contributed to instability and insecurity,” Raja added.

The ambassador also reiterated Iran’s commitment to international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently emphasised the importance of respecting the principles of international law, preserving regional peace and stability, and resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means, while at the same time reserving its legitimate right to defend its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” he said.
