US Deploys Drones – Troops To Strengthen Nigeria’s Fight Against Terrorism

The United States has stepped up its support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations by deploying drones and military personnel to assist in tackling insurgency.

Gatekeepers News teports that the US sent multiple MQ-9 drones alongside about 200 troops to Nigeria to provide intelligence and training support to the country’s armed forces in their fight against Islamist militants. 

The deployment is part of ongoing security cooperation between both countries, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat insurgent groups operating בעיקר in the north-east and other troubled regions.

Reports indicate that the US personnel are not expected to engage in direct combat but will focus on advisory roles, intelligence sharing, and technical assistance to Nigerian forces. 

The move comes amid rising concerns over the activities of extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as increasing use of advanced tactics, including drones, by terrorist groups in the region. 

Nigeria has faced prolonged security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and kidnappings, prompting the government to seek stronger international partnerships to enhance military operations.

The latest deployment underscores deepening military ties between Nigeria and the US, following recent collaborations involving intelligence support, equipment supply, and joint efforts to curb terrorism.
