Gunmen attacked a security team in the Giro Masa community of Shanga Local Government Area in Kebbi State late Tuesday night, killing at least nine soldiers and one police officer.
Gatekeeepers News reports that the assault occurred as troops were responding to intelligence about armed suspects operating in the area. Two military trucks were reportedly set ablaze during the ambush.
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State described the attack as “barbaric” while visiting the mortuary and hospital facilities where the victims were taken.
He assured that the state government would support the families of the fallen security personnel and cover medical expenses for the injured, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting residents and combating insecurity.
Eyewitnesses said chaos and panic ensued after the attack, though the military has yet to release a detailed statement or confirm the identities of the gunmen.
The ambush adds to a pattern of violent incidents in northwest Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on security forces have remained persistent challenges.
