Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their membership registers, directing that such submissions must now be made at least 21 days before party primaries.

Gatekeepers News reports that the electoral body announced that the new deadline for submission has been moved from April 21 to May 10, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC said the adjustment followed concerns raised by political parties over the earlier timeline during a meeting held on March 24, noting that the revision aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

“The register of party members must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the holding of their respective primaries,” the commission stated.

With the revised schedule, political parties are now allowed to fix their primary election dates within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026, provided they comply with the 21-day requirement for register submission.

INEC emphasised that adherence to the updated timeline is essential to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.
