Senate Threatens Action Against Agencies Ignoring Audit Queries

Senate has suspended plenary till June 10, 2021.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian Senate suspended next week’s plenary in a bid to commence the review of the 1999 Constitution.

The suspension was announced on Wednesday by President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who received a notification from his deputy, Ovie Omo-Agege, via a letter that was read on the Senate floor.

The week will be committed to the 2-day zonal public hearing which will hold at two centres across the 6 Geo-political zones simultaneously by 10 am to 5 pm daily (of the said date).

Gatekeepers News reports that the six Geo-political Zones are;

North Central: Jos Central (Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue)

Minna Centre (Niger, Kwara, Kogi and FCT)

North-East:    Bauchi Centre (Bauchi Yobe and Borno)

Gombe Centre (Gombe Centre, Taraba and Adamawa)

North-West:  Kaduna Centre (Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa and Katsina)

Sokoto Centre (Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara)

South-East:   Owerri Centre (Imo and Abia)

Enugu Centre (Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra)

South-South: Asaba Centre (Delta, Edo and Bayelsa)

Port Harcourt Centre (Rivers, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom)

South-West: Lagos Centre (Lagos, Oyo and Ogun)

Akure Centre (Ondo and Osun)

Gatekeepers News reports Senate, had last week, invited the general public, government functionaries, civil society/interest groups, professionals bodies, and other interested persons for the public hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.

Some of the issues to be discussed at the hearings are; Gender Equity/Increased participation of Women and Vulnerable groups in Governance; the Federal Structure in Governance and Power Devolution; Local Government Administration/Local Government autonomy; Public Revenue, Fiscal Federalism and Revenue Allocation; Constitutional Provision for the Establishment of State Police; Judicial Reform – Adjudication of election and pre-election matters and other justice delivery concerns; Electoral Reforms that will make INEC deliver transparent, credible, free and fair elections, political parties, independent candidature and election management, among others.
