Yusuf Maitama Tuggar has stepped down from his position as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In a resignation letter submitted ahead of the March 31 deadline for political appointees, Tuggar expressed gratitude to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the administration’s 4D foreign policy strategy.
He also appreciated the management and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the diplomatic community, for their cooperation and support during his tenure.
During his time in office, Tuggar was credited with advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy through people-focused initiatives, including humanitarian evacuations, scholarship facilitation, and support for Nigerians in the diaspora. His tenure also saw efforts to strengthen diaspora engagement through the development of a structured database for Nigerians abroad.
The former minister played a role in deepening Nigeria’s bilateral and multilateral relations, particularly with key partners and alliances in the Global South. His administration also focused on promoting regional security cooperation and economic diplomacy aimed at attracting foreign investment, especially in the energy sector.
He was further noted for facilitating diplomatic engagements that led to the release of detained Nigerians abroad and improving bilateral ties.
Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, where it was received by Abubakar Kana on behalf of the SGF.
The resignation comes in line with the directive for political office holders to step down ahead of upcoming electoral processes.
