At least 30 students and one teacher of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, were hospitalised on Wednesday following exposure to a suspected gas leak that caused panic within the school premises.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident reportedly occurred shortly after the morning assembly when a strange gaseous substance spread across the school, leaving several students and staff struggling to breathe and some collapsing.

Ogun State’s Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed that the affected students and the teacher were rushed to the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, for medical attention. Most of those affected are now in stable condition, and some have been discharged, he said.

Oresanya said there were no signs of an industrial gas pipeline or facility near the school, and authorities are still investigating the exact source of the fumes.

He noted that during inspections, his team found a nearby bush where gas-using activities might have occurred, and officials are working to trace the cause of the leak.

The state government has assured residents that further details will be released once investigations conclude.
