Labour Party (LP) has announced plans to hold its national convention on April 28, 2026, in Umuahia, Abia State as part of efforts to restructure its leadership and strengthen internal democracy ahead of future elections.

Gatekeepers News reports that the decision was formally communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through an official letter signed by the party’s interim national chairman, Nenadi Usman.

The notification outlines a comprehensive timetable for the party’s elective congresses at all levels, culminating in the national convention where new national executives are expected to emerge.

According to the schedule, ward congresses will be held on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24 and state congresses on April 25 across the country, paving the way for the April 28 convention.

The party said the exercise is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), the 1999 Constitution, and INEC guidelines, which require political parties to notify the electoral body of major activities such as congresses and conventions.

Party officials explained that the convention, scheduled to take place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, will serve as a decisive gathering to elect new leaders and reposition the party’s structure.

The development follows an earlier postponement of the convention, which was initially slated for April 11. The party said the delay was necessary to allow broader participation of members, particularly to complete its ongoing digital membership registration process and ensure a more inclusive and credible exercise.

In addition, a committee had been set up to oversee the congresses and convention to guarantee transparency and smooth coordination nationwide.

Political observers note that the outcome of the convention could significantly shape the balance of power within the party, especially as it prepares for the 2027 general elections and seeks to consolidate gains made in recent electoral cycles.

The convention is also expected to address internal disagreements within the party and provide a platform for reconciliation among factions, as the leadership works to unify members and strengthen its position as a major opposition force in Nigeria.
