Troops of Nigerian Army have successfully foiled an attempted improvised explosive device (IED) attack and killed suspected terrorists during an operation in Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to security sources, the incident occurred late Thursday night along the Maiduguri–Konduga–Kawuri road, a critical supply route frequently targeted by insurgents.
The troops, who were on an ambush patrol, reportedly spotted the suspects attempting to plant an IED at about 11:30 pm. Acting swiftly, the soldiers engaged the attackers using a rocket-propelled grenade, triggering an explosion that killed the suspected terrorists on the spot.
Following the operation, troops conducted a sweep of the area and recovered at least two AK-47 rifles believed to have been used by the insurgents.
Military sources said surveillance has since been intensified along the axis to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of commuters and logistics convoys moving through the route.
The latest development highlights ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in Nigeria’s north-east, where troops have continued to disrupt planned attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Recent coordinated operations involving ground forces and air support have also led to the neutralisation of several fighters and the prevention of bomb attacks across parts of Borno.
Borno remains the epicentre of Nigeria’s long-running insurgency, with roads and military supply routes often targeted using IEDs in attempts to inflict casualties and disrupt movement. However, sustained military offensives and intelligence-led operations have helped in reducing the scale of attacks and intercepting planned assaults in the region.
