Six workers were injured on Friday after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Gatekeepers News reports that the structure caved in around 11 am while workers were on-site, triggering an emergency response from relevant agencies.
In a statement, Nkechi Isa, head of public affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), said rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no one remains trapped beneath the debris.
According to FEMD, 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building at the time of the incident.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no person is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building in Jikwoyi, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT,” the statement reads.
“FEMD search and rescue team says that 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building.”
The agency added that those injured, along with the rescued victim, were taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are responding to treatment.
Emergency responders at the scene include operatives of FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, the engineering department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Fire Service (FFS), and the FCT Police Command.
FEMD said excavation at the site is “still ongoing until ground zero to ensure that no person is trapped in the rubble.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a fire outbreak affected part of a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa Expressway in Bwari Area Council.
The incident occurred at about 12 noon on Friday at Earloha Chery Centre, located at Arab Junction, Kubwa.
Monday Adie, FEMD head of search and rescue, said “no lives were lost in the fire incident.”
He added that workers at the centre moved vehicles out of the premises after initial attempts to contain the fire with extinguishers failed. A section of the building was completely razed, with equipment and documents destroyed.
