At least 17 people have been killed following a deadly attack by suspected herders on a community in Benue State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred in Mbalom, a community in Gwer East Local Government Area, where gunmen invaded the area on Saturday evening.
Sources said the attackers stormed the community at about 5pm and unleashed violence on residents for several hours, with the assault reportedly lasting until around 10pm.
The attack left multiple casualties, with at least 17 people confirmed dead, while several houses and properties were also destroyed during the invasion.
The development has thrown the community into mourning, as families grapple with the loss of loved ones and widespread destruction.
Benue State, often referred to as Nigeria’s “food basket,” has experienced repeated violent clashes linked to tensions between farmers and herders, with attacks on rural communities becoming increasingly frequent.
