Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has lost his wife, Hadiza Jega.
Gatekeepers News reports that the family confirmed that she passed away in Abuja on Sunday. In a statement announcing her death also, Bayero University Kano, where Jega previously served as vice-chancellor, expressed condolences and described the loss as deeply painful.
The institution noted that her Janazah (funeral prayer) was scheduled to take place after the Zuhr prayer at the National Mosque in Abuja on the same day.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also commiserated with Jega, describing the late Hadiza as a woman of uncommon grace and character who stood as a strong pillar of support to her husband throughout his years in public service.
The president further acknowledged her contributions to education and community development, noting that her impact extended beyond her immediate family.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima attended the funeral prayers in Abuja and conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family.
Jega, a professor of political science, served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015 and currently holds key advisory roles in government, including involvement in livestock reforms.
