A heavy rainstorm in Abuja has triggered massive traffic congestion after damaging key infrastructure along a major highway in the capital.
Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday along the busy Nyanya-Keffi expressway, where vehicles were left stranded for hours following the downpour.
The storm reportedly tore off sections of the roof of the newly constructed Kugbo bus terminal, with debris scattered across the road, obstructing movement and worsening the gridlock.
The situation was further compounded by damage to a nearby pedestrian bridge, as strong winds and rainfall affected surrounding structures in the area.
Confirming the development, Lere Olayinka, aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, said:
“Windstorm has damaged some parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Nyanya, Abuja,”
He added, “The windstorm, which occurred during a heavy rainfall a few hours ago, also caused minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some buildings in the area.”
Despite the scale of the disruption, authorities said there were no casualties or damage to vehicles.
Officials also disclosed that security personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain order and assist in traffic control, while efforts are ongoing to clear debris and restore normal movement along the route.
The Nyanya-Keffi corridor is a critical link between the FCT and neighbouring Nasarawa State.
