Suspected terrorists have attacked a Nigerian military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, killing an unspecified number of soldiers in a fresh escalation of insurgent violence in the north-east.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to reports, the attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday when heavily armed fighters stormed the military formation, engaging troops in a fierce gun battle. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed the incident but did not disclose the exact number of casualties.

Military authorities also declined to clarify the status of a brigadier-general believed to be among those affected by the assault, fueling uncertainty over whether the senior officer was killed, injured, or missing after the attack.

However, other reports indicate that the assault may have resulted in significant losses, with some sources suggesting that a senior officer and several soldiers were killed during the coordinated raid.

The base, located in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, has been a frequent target of insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), both of which remain active in the region.

The latest incident highlights the persistent threat posed by insurgents, who have increasingly launched daring attacks on military formations despite ongoing counterterrorism operations.

The Nigerian military has yet to release full details of the attack, including the number of casualties or the operational response, as investigations and possible mop-up operations continue.
