Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on Ikeja West–Osogbo 330kV transmission line after a severe rainstorm caused major damage to the infrastructure.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident occurred on April 16 when the line tripped during the storm due to a fault detected about 14.9 kilometres from the Ikeja West end of the corridor.

Further inspection by TCN engineers revealed that Tower 515 collapsed at its midsection, leading to the disruption of power transmission along the route.

The Ikeja West–Osogbo line is a critical part of Nigeria’s electricity network, responsible for transmitting bulk power across Lagos and other parts of the South-West, meaning the damage could affect supply in several areas.

TCN explained that the declaration of force majeure indicates that the disruption was caused by circumstances beyond its control, in this case, extreme weather conditions.

The company said emergency repair efforts are already underway, with engineers dismantling the damaged tower and mobilising materials and personnel for reconstruction. It also assured that an alternative transmission line is still operational to help maintain electricity supply while repairs continue.

TCN added that it would continue to provide updates as work progresses to restore full capacity on the affected line.
