Jimoh Ibrahim has officially assumed office as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, marking the start of his diplomatic assignment at the global body.

Gatekeepers News reports that Ibrahim presented his letter of credence, a formal diplomatic requirement, to the UN, signalling the commencement of his duties.

His appointment followed clearance from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier in April, after which he was authorised to resume at the international organisation.

In his remarks, Ibrahim assured the UN and the international community of Nigeria’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu to address long-standing national challenges and strengthen global cooperation. He also called for support from the international community in advancing Nigeria’s interests.

TheCable reports that his posting has generated mixed reactions, with some civil society organisations previously raising concerns and calling for a review of his appointment over alleged legal issues.

Ibrahim, a former senator representing Ondo South, was appointed by Tinubu in March 2026 as part of a broader deployment of ambassadors to various diplomatic missions worldwide.

His new role places him as Nigeria’s chief representative at the UN, where he is expected to promote the country’s foreign policy objectives and participate in key global discussions.
