Tension gripped Washington on Saturday night after gunshots were fired near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner attended by US President Donald Trump.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident triggered panic and a swift security response that forced an abrupt end to the high-profile gathering.

The incident occurred outside the main venue where hundreds of journalists, politicians and dignitaries had assembled for the annual event.

According to early reports, a lone suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint before opening fire, drawing an immediate reaction from law enforcement officers stationed at the scene. Security operatives, including the Secret Service, moved quickly to neutralise the threat and secure the area.

As the sound of gunfire rang out, guests inside the hall scrambled for safety, with many taking cover under tables while others were ushered out through emergency exits.

Trump and other top officials present were rapidly evacuated from the premises by security personnel, preventing any direct harm. The president was later confirmed to be safe and unharmed.

Authorities disclosed that one law enforcement officer sustained injuries during the incident but survived due to protective gear. No fatalities were recorded, and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

The annual dinner, known for bringing together the political and media elite, was immediately cancelled as security agencies cordoned off the area to begin investigations.

Preliminary findings suggest the attacker may have been targeting individuals connected to Trump’s administration, although officials say the motive is still under investigation.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance around key government locations in Washington, D.C..
