Gatekeepers News reports that the development was confirmed in a statement released by media and marketing firm ID Africa.

Existing eligible Showmax users without active DStv subscriptions were also offered temporary access to the DStv Stream Compact package until May 31, 2026. After the trial period, subscribers will reportedly pay ₦6,500 monthly for the package, provided their payments remain active.

MultiChoice had earlier announced plans to discontinue Showmax after comprehensive review of its streaming strategy amid increasing competition in the global streaming industry. The company said the move was aimed at strengthening its overall digital offering and consolidating its streaming services under the DStv Stream platform.

Showmax, launched in 2015, grew into one of Africa’s leading streaming platforms with millions of subscribers across the continent. However, reports indicated the service faced financial challenges despite strong audience growth, leading MultiChoice to streamline its operations and focus more heavily on DStv Stream.
