Three personnel of the British Royal Navy have been confirmed dead after a military helicopter crashed during a routine training exercise in southwest England.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to the UK Ministry of Defence, the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, when a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter went down in a field near Sourton Down, close to Okehampton in Devon, shortly before 4:00 a.m. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a sudden crash and explosion in the area.

Authorities said the aircraft was engaged in a training mission involving naval aviation operations when it came down under unclear circumstances. Witnesses in the area described hearing loud engine noises followed by a flash and a fireball as the helicopter crashed.

The Royal Navy confirmed that all three crew members onboard were killed. Their identities have not yet been released, as officials said families have been informed and are being given support.

Military and government officials, including the UK Defence Secretary and the Royal Navy leadership, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a devastating blow to the naval community. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

The Merlin helicopter involved is widely used by the Royal Navy for missions such as anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and maritime patrol operations, and is also regularly deployed for training exercises.

This incident adds to concerns about military aviation safety, coming amid challenging weather conditions reported in the area at the time, including heavy rain and strong winds.

Authorities say further updates will be released as investigations continue.
