Senate has moved forward with legislation seeking to establish a statutory regulatory body for microbiologists in Nigeria, aimed at standardising practice, improving professional oversight, and strengthening public health safety in the country.

Gatekeepers News reports that the proposed bill, which scaled second reading, seeks to create a council that will regulate the training, certification, and practice of microbiologists, similar to existing professional bodies in the health and scientific sectors.

Lawmakers said the move is intended to close regulatory gaps and ensure only qualified professionals are allowed to operate in the field.

During debate, senators noted that microbiology plays a critical role in disease control, food safety, environmental monitoring, and medical research, especially in a period where infectious diseases remain a national concern. They argued that a structured regulatory framework would enhance accountability and improve standards of practice.

Supporters of the bill also maintained that establishing the council would help curb quackery, improve career development for practitioners, and align Nigeria’s scientific regulation with international best practices.

The bill was referred to a relevant Senate committee for further legislative scrutiny and will return for additional consideration after review.
